- Author and neuroscientist Colleen McCullough was born in Wellington, NSW on the 1st of June 1937.
1942
- Japanese mini-submarine M-24 fired two torpedoes at US Cruiser Chicago, inside Sydney Harbour in the early hours of the morning, June 1st, 1942. The torpedoes both missed the Chicago but one of them hit the breakwater where HMAS Kuttabul, a converted ferry boat, was tied up. The explosion cut the boat in half resulting in the death of 19 Royal Australian Navy and two Royal Navy sailors. A further 10 were injured.
