  • The first narrow-gauge mainline railway in the world opened in Grandchester, Queensland on the 31st of July 1865. The line ran for about 35 kilometers, to Ipswich in South-East Qld.

  • 96 Miners were killed after an explosion in the Mt Kembla coal mine on July 31, 1902.

  • Test cricketer Bill Brown (William Alred Brown OAM) was born on this day in 1912 in Toowoomba, Queensland. Bill played 22 tests for Australia and 189 first-class matches. He had a test average of 46.82 and a top score of 206 not out.
