1823

  • Sir John Colton, the 13th Premier of South Australia, was born in Devon, England, on the 23rd of September 1823. Colton was Premier from the 6th of June 1876 until the 26th of October 1877.

1940

  • Australian representative Water Polo, Rugby Union, and Rugby League player, Dick Thornett, was born on this day in 1940. He represented Australia at Water polo in the 1960 Rome Olympics before playing Rugby Union for Australia in 1961 & 1962. He then switched codes to Rugby League and played 11 games for Australia between 1963 and 1968. Thornett played first grade for the Parramatta Eels and Eastern Suburbs.
